How To Strengthen Your Antioxidant Defenses

Surprisingly, many people do not know what Antioxidants are and how they benefit our bodies.

The National Cancer Institute defines Antioxidants as substances that may protect cells from the damage cause by unstable molecules known as free radicals. Free radical damage may lead to cancer, is linked to aging, heart disease as well as many other illnesses and diseases. Antioxidants interact with and stabilize free radicals and may prevent some of the damage free radicals otherwise might cause.

Examples of antioxidants include, but are not limited to, beta-carotene, lycopene, vitamins C, E, and A.

There are foods that are rich in antioxidants and should be included in our daily diet. Some of those foods are listed below:

  • Beta-carotene can be found in sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe, squash, apricots, pumpkin, mangoes, collard greens and spinach.
  • Spinach and collard greens are also a source of Lutein (which promotes healthy eyes).
  • Tomatoes, watermelon, apricots, pink grapefruit and papaya are just some of the foods that provide a source of Lycopene.
Antioxidants have a number of health benefits that should be explored. Because oxidation, the loss of an electron which can produce free radicals, occurs naturally within the body, a balance with antioxidants is necessary to maintain health.

GNC has a product that I have found that promotes a healthy immune system and supports healthy aging by naturally strengthening the body's own antioxidant defenses and protects against cell damage caused by free radicals.
